Evaluation - Question One

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For this question I used directors commentary. I used footage of my music video and those which inspired me to help depict what I was talking about.

Here are links to all the music videos I referenced:

Caggie Dunlop - "Neverland" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gdm4UfHDR4
Chase & Status - "Lost & Not Found" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-w1nmEQ7IM
Phaeleh - "Whistling in the Dark" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAWJvVJoVmg
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - "Same Love" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlVBg7_08n0
The Neighbourhood - "Sweater Weather" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCdwKhTtNNw
Hozier - "Take Me To Church" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYSVMgRr6pw
Peter Gabriel - "Sledgehammer" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJWJE0x7T4Q
Kina Grannis - "In Your Arms" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOu0DuxFAT0

Evaluation - Question Two

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

For this question I have answered with a video of myself which I have uploaded to YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkfkI56ZvVU

For this question I am going to be discussing:
- The effects of Web 2.0 on artists promotion.
- Why I chose to create my website on www.wix.com
- Why I decided to create the whole website rather than just the homepage
- How I focused on Bonobo when creating the website and the links I used
- How I linked the music video, DVD cover and website
- The logo and fonts I used
- The creation of my ancillary text imagery on weavesilk.com
- Why I used green and blue imagery rather than black and white
- How each product promotes one another

I hope you enjoy watching it.

Evaluation - Question Three

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

For this question I asked Cameron Wishart to have an interview with me so we could discuss my music video and ancillary texts in more detail. Cameron is eighteen so fitted into my target audience. He also does art and performing arts so his views about the imagery and acting (in particular) were very valuable to me.

Below is my interview:

I also created questionnaires which I asked people to complete after showing them my music video and ancillary texts. I have created graphs with this data. The people I asked were predominately in my target audience (17-24 year olds), however, I did also ask those outside this age group too as I was interested in their views.

I was reassured by my research, before showing people I was really worried about the symbolism and ambiguity of the video because I didn't think many people would understand my ideas. However, I did find that over half of the people I showed thought the symbolism worked and half realised it was a portrayal of someones life. Having said this the ones who did not initially realise it was a depiction of life did realise after viewing the video again. My interviewee Cameron Wishart actually said how he did not understand this until his second viewing as the first time he was focusing on the imagery and editing. However, maybe I could of made this clearer.

I also found that  four of the people I showed the video and ancillary texts, didn't think the image on the DVD case and Website completely complimented the video. They suggested I used something more directly linked to the video, for example a screen grab or picture of the girl. Although they did say they liked the image I used and thought it was very creative.

Evaluation - Question Four

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

For this question I created a presentation and uploaded it the Scribd. Please view it below.

Location - Bookshelf

I filmed shots of scene eight - the university scene - in the study of my house using a white cupboard. I wanted to have a panning shot of lots of books to depict university so knew I wanted to use a bookshelf. However, I also wanted to keep with the white background like I used in my stop-frame animation, so I opted to use this one rather than I wooden or metal bookshelf.

I wanted the shot to be steady so I created my on DIY dolly using Lego. Unfortunately I found that sliding it along the shelf was actually more stead than my Lego dolly!

I wanted a shot similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJMfhKKt6wo

Recondite

I recently discovered Recondite on Spotify, another artist who is similar to Bonobo, so I decided to take a look at his music videos on Youtube. Recondite, real name Lorenz Brunner, is German producer who uses a slow form of techno and house.

Both music videos I looked at were very simple yet effective. They both used what looked like only one shot for the whole music video but with editing made it more interesting.

The first one I watched was "Tie In". In this video there is beautiful imagery of a hillside area covered in snow. The shot films the hillside for the majority but the panning and blocked objects (trees, hedges) in front of speed up and slow down as the beat does. The video creates the feeling that you are on a train or bus that is slowing down and speeding up. I think the cold bleak landscape is representative of where he grew up, it is thought his music has been related to this. Like me, all of his video is shot in black and white, I think this adds the 'bleakness' of it. The music fits with the imagery really well. I hope my video fits the music like this.

The next video I looked at was called "Harbinger", this video is shot underwater and films some what look like some sea plant of fish which moves slowly with the current of the sea making it look as though they are dancing. Like this video, I have chosen to use some underwater shots. The editing is distorted and keeps replaying the same clip over and over which goes with the distortion and repetition of house music. See music video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf_59RX8vIw

The Girl

Although initially I wanted to have no character in my music video and have a more symbolic/ through their eyes approach, I have used one to help in some shots. Because this was just a bit of an experiment I used myself rather than finding an actress, however, I really like some of the shots I got and have used them in my final production.

I filmed the majority of shots with a tripod in a forest after being inspired from Phaeleh's video "Tokio". See my post about the video HERE

Like Phaeleh, I wanted my character to be barefoot as this is a symbolism of innocence and childhood and therefore will symbolise her journey from childhood.

I chose to wear a simple red dress, I knew I would be editing in black and white so the colour wasn't a massive priority for me, however, I did want to stand out from the greenery of the forest. I chose the dress due to the chiffon layering which made it flow in the wind.

I chose not to show my face until the very last shot at the end of the music video, when the character is supposedly in heaven, this was one of my ways of keeping the ambiguity as the audience never really sees who this music video is about until the end. Throughout the video parts of the character is shown (my eyes, nose etc) but you never seer my face till the end. I also didn't really want to characterise the video as being aimed at a particular gender and therefore didn't feel the need to show my full face, although of course it is evident I am a girl from my dress and hair, I didn't want to have an effect on my audience who are both male and female.

Here is a picture of the costume from the shooting day.

DIY Effects

I used a variety of methods to try and create different textures to my shots and achieve my abstract vision.

I looked for ways at making more interesting shots using things from around the house. I experimented with a kaleidoscope, cling film, cardboard (which I put holes into), ink underwater, putting a clear bag over the camera and more. I think my favourite two effects were created from the kaleidoscope and cardboard with holes in.

Using the kaleidoscope and cardboard I filmed clips of my face, focussing on my nose, mouth and lips. I used this imagery to portray the development of the persons senses as they explore and use them in life. Here are imagery and them.

I hole punched holes into the cardboard randomly to create my effect. I feel this created the feeling that the person was discovering each sense one by one. I zoomed in on the camera so the focus was on each facial feature and not the cardboard.

The kaleidoscope created the vision of multiplying shots. Similarly to the cardboard I zoomed in order to make the camera focus completely on the imagery and not the kaleidoscope.

Here are the scenes were I have used the kaleidoscope and cardboard shots.

Location - The Forrest

I mentioned earlier how I filmed some of my woodland scenes in Ardley Woods (see post here- http://elliebuncea2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/filming-outside.html) but I wanted to go into more detail about why I chose each specific area.

Each location was chosen to enhance the symbolism I was trying to achieve.

The first shot I filmed was along a mud pathway surrounded by trees. I wanted to portray my character walking down the pathway of life as she grows up. Because it was near the beginning of the music video so I wanted to keep an earthly feel, hence why I chose the forest pathway rather than a street or road. Within the forest there are also lots of things that grow, from the trees and flowers to animals, so I thought it would be a fitting location
See picture to the right.

Here I also filmed shots of the sun as it beamed through the trees. I filmed this on a different day but at the same location when the sun was slightly lower and so at a better angle to film. I used these shots in the opening and closing scenes. To portray the cycle of life, a new day (for the start) and the ending of a day (for the end).

The next shot was just up the road. It was a T junction like layout where two pathways came out of the original one I was following. I thought this with be perfect in portraying the choices the character must make in their life - particularly as they find and look for work. Originally I planned to film the T junction type shot of a road, but I thought this had a much nicer look to it and was more fitting in the piece.

Another place I filmed was slightly further down where the forest goes into an open field. I used this shot for the ending and reversed the shot as if the person from being drawn away from the freedom of life and into the darkness of the forest. Originally I planned to show the girl walking from the forest into the openness, which I thought would represent heaven, but I felt the shot worked better with the music in reverse.

Production Schedule

Throughout my A2 course I have been using a production schedule to help me stay on track. It helps me organise and plan when I will be able to shoot scenes and what I will need. It has proven very helpful throughout.

Tuesday, 1 April 2014

Location - Field

I have filmed twice in this field now for two different scenes. Scene seven - lost teenage years - and scene 16 as the character is dying.

In the last two scenes I have use the field to symbolise heaven. I filmed on a sunnier day for these scenes and brightened the contrast. This is because I thought the bright whiteness was a reflection of most people's perception of heaven.

I also used this location for scene seven when the character is a teenager and becoming lost within the world. I chose here as the opening space works well in portraying the lost theme.

Here is an example of the footage I got in this location:

Audience Research - Electro

My music video is aimed at people who listen to Bonobo. When researching his fans I discovered the majority of 'likes' he had on Facebook were from 18-14 year olds. See previous post http://elliebuncea2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/audience-research-bonobo.html. However, I would say my main target audience is from 17-24 as my friends and I, who are 17, listen to Bonobo and are interested in his music videos. I am focussing on 'young adults'.

After seeing who's Bonobo's fans were on Facebook, I decided to start looking at other artists in the ectro genre who are related to Bonobo.

All artists I looked at had most popular age groups of 18-24 years old. I looked at artist from in and outside of England, including ODESZA, Amtrac, Phaeleh and SBTRKT. See picture below.

I have also found that typical conventions of electro music videos focus on alcohol, drugs and being in a dream state. Videos are often heavily edited, for example rewinds, with dancing and strobe lights. The videos audience are generally those who go clubbing and drink lots (this is often young adults), it is not gender specific.

My Logo

I've created a logo for my artist, Bonobo, which I can use in my ancillary texts on my website and DVD case. A lot of artists have their own logos which they can be recognised by. I have looked at artists similar to Bonobo to inspire my logo. My logo is to the right.

See artists I researched below. From left to right they are, Amtrac, Phaeleh and Sbtrkt.

I noted a lot of logos have the artists initials. For example the shadow of the man in Amtrac's logo creates an A shape and the circle and line combo creates a P for Phaeleh. Sbtrkt's logo, however, is an image of the mask the artists wears. I also noticed whilst researching, that logos are often in black and white and fairly simplistic.

I chose to incorporate the black and white theme and putting the initial of my artists in. I used a shape graphic that I found on wix.com and then added the 'B' initial to represent it was for Bonobo.

I have put the logo on my DVD case and website. These are my draft versions.

Audience Research - Bonobo

I don't think the artist I am using for my music video, Bonobo, has a particular genre but comes under electronic/downtempo. His music has a close connection to drugs, in particular weed, which I noticed looking at his fans comments on YouTube. I also looked at his fans on his Facebook and found a statistic showing that the most popular age group was 18-24 years old. When looking a gig pictures I also noted that the fans are predominately males in the majority of photos. A good friend of mine saw him perform in Oxford and said the majority of people there were "young people with interests in experimental and modern music". He also noted many were males with beards! So if I was to say who my target audience were I would have to say young male adults.

Location - The Bath Tub

As bizarre as it may sound I have been filming a lot of shots in my bath, in particular the stop frame animation. My bath is the perfect place to film as it all white and so my background on every shot it the same clean white background.
Here is one example of my stop frame animation which I filmed in the bath.

Filming Outside

On Wednesday I took advantage of the sun and did some filming Ardley Woods which was perfect for the shots I wanted. I filmed in both the forest and field. The sun as great when I was in the field as it was so bright and reflected heaven (which is what I want to depict towards the end). I used an actress to help me with these scenes. Some of the shots were similar to those I had seen in Phaeleh's video 'Tokio' (see my previous post on the video here: http://elliebuncea2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/phaeleh-tokoi.html) This is the woods/field I filmed in from a birds-eye-view.

Here are some of the shots I got:

The Tunnel

For the tunnel in the opening sequence I simply used a cardboard tube which had a poster of a map in. I thought about using a larger metal tunnel but loved the look of the cardboard rims inside the tunnel. I held the tube to the sun light to film and zoomed in and out to get the shot I wanted. A simple but effective way of portraying coming out of a tunnel to symbolise birth.

Audience Research - 50 Cent

50 Cent, real name Curtis James Jackson III, fits into the hip hop/rap genre. His fans dress like him in this gangster, hip hop way in baggy trousers, over sized jackets and flat peak hats. Not only do his fans dress the same but they also have similar stances and gait, hands in pockets, head held high. This 'gangster' stereotype has great emphasis on acting 'hard' and being the bigger male which is very apparent in all the fans poses to the camera.

Here is one of his music videos:

Audience Research - McFly

McFly are a contemporary pop group of four boys and so it is completely understandable that the majority of their audience are young girls! I was a big fan too when I was younger. The boy band produce upbeat, chart topping songs. They have appears on lots of TV young girls/children will watch and also featured on the soundtrack of a teen film 'Just my luck'. Also being seen as 'male heart throbs' it's not surprising the majority of fans are females.

Audience Research - Dolly Parton

Like Kiss' fans, Dolly Parton fans also dress similarly to her. Dolly Parton is an American singer-songwriter who has been producing country music since 1955. He fans stick to the stereotypical country routes wearing denim jeans, checked shirts and cowboy style hats. They have also styled their hair or worn wigs which are similar to Dolly Partons big blonde hair.

Below is my favourite Dolly Parton track:

Audience Research - Kiss

‘Kiss’ are an American rock band known for their white faces and elaborate costumes that rose in 1973. From James Mollison’s project we can see their fans dress and even act similarly (sticking their tongues out). All fans have matching white and black face paints with dark rock outfits on. Most look 30+ which is understandable as the band will have grown up with the majority of their fans having only a small younger audience as they are less big now.

James Mollison 'The Disciples'

My teacher recently introduced me to photographer, James Mollison, and his project 'The Disciples'. The project looks at the fans associated with a mix of music artists. It is clear from his pictures each bad has a very stereotypical fan. It is apparent their clothing is mimicking the music artist they are seeing or that genre.

Here is a link to his website: http://www.jamesmollison.com/project_disciples.php

James Mollison writes:  "Over three years I photographed fans outside different concerts. I was fascinated by the different tribes of people that attended them, and how people emulated celebrity to form their identity. As I photographed the project I began to see how the concerts became events for people to come together with surrogate 'families', a chance to relive their youth or try and be part of a scene that happened before they were born."

Distortion

I mentioned earlier that I wanted to include clocks throughout my peice to symbolise the passing of time (see post here: http://elliebuncea2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/time-symbolism.html). I've played around on photoshop to distort the images I have taken, see pictures below.

My Opening

This is my opening so far. I like exporting my edited clips to help me view it fully and seeing what bits need tweaking. The start is a portrayal of my characters birth. The water and tube are representative of the womb. I then sped up the shots at 0.32 to portray how the busy the world may seem to a baby. The shots of eyes, noses and light are to depict the development of their senses (getting use to their sight, new smells etc.)

DVD Image

I’ve been trying to think what image I would like to use on my DVD case for my music video. I want to use an image that keeps the ambiguity of the video and doesn’t give too much away. I like the simplicity of Bonobo and Phaeleh’s album covers so think I will take a similar approach.

I recently discovered http://weavesilk.com/ , an interactive generative art website. I managed to make some pretty nice imagery with it. I followed the idea of using symmetry/mirroring which was common in Bonobo’s albums. See previous posts:  http://elliebuncea2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/bonobo-album-covers.html and http://elliebuncea2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/phaeleh-album-covers.html .
Below are images I created.

Phaeleh - Whistling in the Dark feat. Augustus Ghost

Another music video I love at the moment Phaeleh - Whistling in the Dark ft Augustus Ghost. The music video was directed by Requél Aly. The music video has a very small underlying message of entrapment which took me a while to grasp; initially I thought there was just visual imagery that compliments the chill dubstep of the song.

All of the video is in black and white, I think this is to focus primarily on the imagery and go well with the song ‘Whistling in the Dark’ – as if it is the unknown. I have also edited all of my music video in black and white as I love this effect and I think it helps the ambiguity of the piece.

In the video the majority of clips we see are of a fish or dancers, perhaps they represent freedom. As the music video goes on we see the fish is in a tank, trapped, the dancer is also sat alone looking like she is crying. In the first verse there are the lyrics ‘with your soul trapped between the tide’ and ‘hiding from your secrets’, these reiterate the entrapment theme.

There are lots of mirror and reflected imagery in the music video making the clips look distorted. I also like the blurs used which add to this.

One particular shot I love is 3.46, with the ink. I have tried these shots myself.

Phaeleh Album Covers

Bonobo Album Covers

I've started looking at album/song covers and DVD cases of artists and films to inspire me when I make my own ancillary texts (in particular the cover release on DVD).

I started looking at Bonobo as I am using his songs. I found lots of similarities and recurring layout/themes in his albums. See images below.

Shots I still need to do/redo:

I made a table/list of shots I still to do/redo to help me organise how far along I am. I love making lists to help me keep on track. Some shots I have already done but didn't like them, or noticed errors in them. See picture below.

Time Symbolism

I like the idea of using lots of shots of clocks and watches in my video in order to symbolise the passing of time. I have taken some pictures of the shots I want to include. I noticed Tom Paton used a pocket watch in his music video ‘Tokoi’ for Phaeleh which I thought symbolised the female protagonist’s life passing. Below are some of the pictures I took.

Phaeleh - Tokoi

I recently Phaeleh’s music video ‘Tokoi’; I discovered Phaeleh on YouTube as his music is very similar to Bonobo’s (who’s song ‘Recurring’ I am using in my music video). The music video for his song ‘Tokio’ was directed by Tom Paton. I absolutely love the music video. Like mine it is open for interpretation. I have interpreted it as life. I think the video is portraying the girl growing and is very similar to my initial idea of my music video.

The video starts with the female protagonist falling from the sky which I believe is a representation of her being born. In the next shot we see of her, at 0.10, she is curled in a ball on the floor as a child would sleep with a bunny rabbit toy nearby. I think this represents her being a toddler. When she wakes she puts her hands to the sun at 0.16, depicting that she is not use to the bright lights (like a baby). Throughout the video there are reoccurring shots of her checking the time on a pocket watch, symbolic of the passing of time. As the video continues the female protagonists walks through a wheat field with a bunny in her hand, feeling the wheat (0.37 ). The shots illustrate a child exploring. The girl goes on to smell different flowers, followed by shots of her eyes and mouth. These frames are as if the girl is discovering her senses of touch, smell, sight and taste. By this point the girl has dropped her bunny rabbit. At 1.28 we then see the girl finding a bottle with a clear liquid substance that makes her fall to the fall and blur the shots, I believe this depicts her youth and teenage years where she finds drugs and alcohol. The next time we see her she is in a dark, more fitted dress, juxtaposed from the pale pink, silky dress she wore initially. This represents her maturing as she develops into a woman. Then at 2.22 we see her take off the pocket watch and place it on, what looks like a grave, made with two twigs. This is a portrayal off her time being up in life and giving herself to death. The video ends with the girl walking off into the sunset as the day comes to the end.

The video has beautiful imagery and so much symbolism. The costumes and props are simple and yet manage to reflect a lifetime. I was struck by how similar it was to my initial plan. Constant changes in the filters help keep the ambiguity of the video leaving all interpretations open to the audience.

Website Homepage Research - Phaeleh

I recently discovered Phaeleh, a multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ based in Bristol. His music is based around dubstep, chill and he is very similar to Bonobo.

I decided to look at his website for inspiration (http://phaeleh.co.uk/). I noticed, as well as his music, his website also has a similar look to Bonobo's. Both are simple, with white text all in (what looks likes) century gothic text, their background is the picture from their latest album, they have links to their social media sites, a recent music video and links to their store and tour dates.

Website Homepage Research - Bonobo

I firstly looked at the Bonobo homepage and I am using his song, 'Recurring', in my music video. See the website here: http://bonobomusic.com/

Ancillary Texts

For my brief I chose ‘a promotion package for the release of an album’, although my music video is the biggest part of the brief, I also need to include two of the three options:
  •  A website homepage for the band;
  •  A cover for its release on DVD;
  •  A magazine advertisement for the DVD.
I am leaning towards creating a website homepage for the band and a cover for its release on DVD. I created a website for one of my evaluation questions last year and really enjoyed it. I used ‘weebly’ to make it, you can see the website here: http://elliebunceevaluation.weebly.com/

I've started to look at DVD covers and websites to help me.

Shots from Caggie Dunlop's 'Neverland'

I know I already analysed Caggie Dunlop - Neverland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gdm4UfHDR4) in a previous post (http://elliebuncea2.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/caggie-dunlop-neverland.html) but after re-watching I've found shots I want to incorporate in my music video.

I mentioned the underwater shots in my last post (http://elliebuncea2.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/filming.html) which inspired me (especially the sun beams which come through the water) in these shots and therefore used them in mine. But their are also lots more.

The video, directed by Cybele Malinowski, has some footage in black and white. I am planning on editing all of my video so it is black and white as I really like the look of it and think it will help the ambiguous theme/feel I am going for.

I also like the merging of the shots of Caggie which I have experimented with in the senses scene to portray my character's initial disorientation.

Another shot I like and have used is the blurred fairy lights which I have also incorporated. I filmed these fairy lights over the summer when I was camping with friends.

I gave these shots a go, see below.

Storyboarding - Scene Fifteen, Sixteen and Seventeen

Scene fifteen will be the passing of time which I was depict by filming a clock moving- this will then be sped up in editing.

Scene sixteen is the character dying where I want to show them in heaven and going back through the tunnel the first came out of in the first scene.

The death is scene seventeen. Here I want to use a shot in the character's perspective of their eyes closing. The last shot will be the character stood in bright light to depict heaven.

The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather

I recently watched The Neighbourhood's music video for the track 'Sweater Weather'. I loved their use of black in white to take me back to the bygone era in which the video is set. I have also chosen to edit mine in black and white.

I also like a lot of their shots and want to incorporate them into mine. For example at clock at 0.25. I thought I could use this to reflect the time of life being precious and constantly running out.

I also liked a shot of the sun glare. I thought I could use this kind of shot in my opening to depict the brightness of coming into the world from orignially being in the womb.

The blurred lights, I can use to show the development of senses- in particular eye sight in the third scene.

The last shot I really liked was towards the end. At this point there is an overylay of three different shots which are upside down. I thought I could use this kind of editing in my university scene to show the two sides of university (both patying and learning). I will also distort the imagery and add new layers which will make it more exciting.
