Phaeleh - Whistling in the Dark feat. Augustus Ghost

Another music video I love at the moment Phaeleh - Whistling in the Dark ft Augustus Ghost. The music video was directed by Requél Aly. The music video has a very small underlying message of entrapment which took me a while to grasp; initially I thought there was just visual imagery that compliments the chill dubstep of the song.

All of the video is in black and white, I think this is to focus primarily on the imagery and go well with the song ‘Whistling in the Dark’ – as if it is the unknown. I have also edited all of my music video in black and white as I love this effect and I think it helps the ambiguity of the piece.

In the video the majority of clips we see are of a fish or dancers, perhaps they represent freedom. As the music video goes on we see the fish is in a tank, trapped, the dancer is also sat alone looking like she is crying. In the first verse there are the lyrics ‘with your soul trapped between the tide’ and ‘hiding from your secrets’, these reiterate the entrapment theme.

There are lots of mirror and reflected imagery in the music video making the clips look distorted. I also like the blurs used which add to this.

One particular shot I love is 3.46, with the ink. I have tried these shots myself.
